Story Circle

A Community Storytelling Project for Russian-Speaking Immigrants in Oregon

Версия на русском

Story Circle is a free workshop series for Russian-speaking immigrants interested in the art of storytelling. Led by filmmaker, writer, and educator Aleksandr Chernousov, this program brings together a small group of participants to learn how to find, shape, and share their personal stories in a safe, creative, and confidential environment.

Sessions are conducted in Russian and English and held in person. The exact schedule and location will be confirmed once the group is formed.

Why Story Circle?

Personal stories connect people in ways that go beyond formality. They create genuine human bonds, offer comfort in difficult times, and build understanding across difference. Story Circles exists so that the Russian-speaking community of Oregon and Washington can strengthen connections within our community and with our neighbors. When we share our stories, we challenge stereotypes and build the foundation for something real.

During the workshops, you will:

  • Learn and practice storytelling techniques
  • Reflect on and share your own experiences and listen to the stories of others
  • Work with personal narratives as tools for both personal and professional growth
  • Participate in structured discussions, small-group exercises, and individual practice

You will leave better equipped to:

  • Tell your own story with clarity and confidence
  • Listen actively and respond to the stories of those around you
  • Use storytelling as a tool for building community and human connection

Everything shared during individual conversations and group sessions is confidential. These gatherings are not about collecting information—they are about sharing experiences and genuine listening.

The podcast: Fairy-tales and Stereotypes

At the conclusion of the program, participants who wish to share their stories beyond the group will have the opportunity to record an episode of Fairy-tales and Stereotypes, a bilingual podcast featuring the voices and stories of program participants. Each episode explores the personal histories, cultural identities, and lived experiences of Russian-speaking immigrants in the Pacific Northwest.

Participation in the podcast is entirely optional.

Meet the Instructor

Aleksandr Chernousov is a filmmaker, writer, and educator with over fifteen years of experience. He is a recipient of multiple awards, including recognition as a Notable Essay of 2024 by The Best American Essays 2025 anthology. Aleksandr is a committed advocate for oral histories as a means of community building and healing.

I first understood the power of oral history when my aunt immigrated to the United States. She pursued my grandma to write down the story of our family. It was the most captivating text I had ever read. I realized how much I didn't know about my own family, even though I spent every summer at my grandma’s. Her story filled me with gratitude to my grandma for sharing, and to my aunt for asking her to do it. I still keep those words, written in school notebooks. My grandma has been gone for over ten years. And here I am, an immigrant myself with my own story to tell.
