Communications Associate

Full time (40 hours per week)

Oregon Humanities connects people and communities through conversation, storytelling, and participatory programs to inspire understanding and collaborative change. Each year, we offer hundreds of public conversations and programs across the state, train and support dozens of discussion facilitators, and award grants and fellowships that help people connect, reflect, and cultivate a stronger sense of agency in their communities. In our magazine and on our website, we publish stories that explore the thoughts, perspectives, and experiences of Oregonians, especially those who have been ignored, generalized, or oppressed. Our long-term hope is that the work of Oregon Humanities will make broad and significant contributions to a more cohesive, inclusive, and imaginative democratic culture.

We are looking for a Communications Associate to help promote Oregon Humanities’ events and publications, maintain relationships with current audiences and partners, and engage with new audiences around Oregon. This position will be responsible for strategically growing our audience and engagement levels across digital and print channels and in-person and online events.

Key responsibilities

Digital communications strategy: 60%

  • Lead direct email marketing, including monthly newsletter and fundraising appeals. Use Salesforce and Campaign Monitor to maintain and grow outreach lists.

  • Manage Oregon Humanities’ social media accounts, working with the communications team to develop engaging campaigns.

  • Develop strategies to improve audience engagement through social media and email communications.

  • Work with the development team and Communications Manager on messaging and communications strategy to deepen donor relationships and attract new donors.

  • Manage Oregon Humanities’ Google grant and Google AdWords campaigns. 

  • Review Google Analytics and collaborate with the communications team to grow and retain online audiences.

General communications support: 40%

  • Support development and programs teams in developing communications strategy and messaging

  • Assist with writing and editing tasks, media relations, production of print and digital collateral, proofreading, and marketing events

  • Assist Communications Manager in creating opportunities for organization-wide staff to develop communications skills

Desired qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

  • A strong interest in and commitment to Oregon Humanities’ mission, publications, and programs

  • Two or more years of experience with digital marketing for cultural, community, or media organizations

  • Experience using a CRM database to develop targeted marketing communications

  • Experience using social media and email communications to engage diverse audiences

  • Excellent written communications skill and experience writing for a variety of public-facing formats, including social media, websites, and email.

  • Proficiency with Google AdWords, Google Analytics, and email marketing platforms

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in the workplace and in public programming

The Details

Reports to: Communications Manager

Work hours: 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)

Fringe benefits: Oregon Humanities offers paid vacation (starting at 16 days/year), sick leave, and 12 floating holidays; medical and dental insurance; 403(B) retirement plan; life-insurance plan; and a sabbatical after five years of full-time employment.

Starting wage range: $22 to $24/hour DOE

Oregon Humanities is following the Governor, state and local, and CDC guidelines regarding COVID practices. This means we are all currently working remotely and will continue until it is safe to work in the office together again. We offer a stipend to help with phone and internet expenses due to this remote requirement. When we aren’t in a pandemic, Oregon Humanities’ downtown Portland office is a sunny, open-floor-plan environment. The office is generally open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with many staff working flexible schedules that best accommodate their professional and personal needs. Applications from Oregon residents living outside of the Portland area will be considered. The communications associate may work occasional weekends and/or evenings. The communications associate will use standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
