The Oregon Council for the Humanities has offered programs and resources for learning and enjoyment to communities, schools, and individuals throughout Oregon for more than twenty-five years. Thanks to support from public and private sources, OCH programs are offered free of charge to nonprofit organizations, schools, and individuals.
Commonplace events are a series of free public lectures, panel discussions, and conversations that connect ideas and communities. These events are held three times each year at different locations throughout the state.
HIP is a free public program providing economically and educationally disadvantaged individuals the opportunity to study the humanities in a year-long college-level course.
Oregon Chautauqua brings scholars and speakers to more than eighty Oregon communities each year. Chautauquas take place in libraries, community centers, museums--wherever people come together to talk, learn, debate, and share their understanding of the world.
Teacher Institutes offer Oregon teachers the chance to study, under the direction of leading scholars, themes and topics directly related to their work as classroom instructors and their role as conveyors of civic traditions.
OCH partners with seventeen public and private schools to offer a two-day Summer Honors Symposium exploring "The Pursuit of Happiness." The Symposium is an annual event serving 100 teens from around the Portland metropolitan area.
In addition to OCH's ongoing regular programming, we occasionally offer public lectures, panels, and reading and discussion series in communities around the state.
