Please Tell Your Senators That Humanities Funding Is Important

Thanks to all of you who contacted your house representatives over the past few weeks in support of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Because of your efforts, the NEH was included in the FY2011 bill for $145 million.

Although we are relieved to have been included in this bill, this figure represents a $22 million decrease for the NEH. This decrease will have an impact on you—it means fewer conversations, fewer discussions, fewer opportunities to think about, reflect upon, and respond to the issues that affect Oregon’s communities.

Next week, the Senate will take up FY2011 spending bill. Please take action now to support the NEH and Oregon Humanities. Again, we will make it easy to send a letter to your senators: please click HERE and you will be taken to the Federation of State Humanities advocacy page and given instructions on how to generate and send a letter.

It’s absolutely crucial that Senators Wyden and Merkley know where Oregonians stand. And, please, consider sending this email on to your friends, family, and colleagues. We need the support of all Oregonians now!

Commentary

Dear Senators;
Funding is critical for NEH and Oregon Humanities.
As a continuing student at Portland State University I have been the reciever of a rich
education that involves Art and the Humanities.
A society that does not support Art and the Humanities is hollow and lacks meaning.It is easy to determine the lack of empathy, communication skills and ability to work together for better
outcomes.By far the most literate,compasionate
and brightest people I have come to know are very
much aware of the needs of Humanties.Learning
about other cultures,Learning about history and
geography would be far less meaningful with out
Art, Music. Children who have had Art in their lives gain in literacy and develope tools to express themselves.They are much less likely to become violent offenders.Please Support NEH and Oregon Humanities.
