$1,000 Grant Awarded for Wallowa County Discussion Series
Oregon Humanities awards Responsive Program Grant to support “Wallowa County in Transition: New Stories from the Old West”

18 January 2012 | Permalink

Oregon Humanities has awarded a Responsive Program Grant of $1,000 to Wallowa Land Trust and Wallowa Resources to support “Wallowa County in Transition: New Stories from the Old West,” a series on how people in rural areas adapt to changing economies, social structures, political landscapes, and ecosystems. Fishtrap is cosponsoring the series. Oregon Humanities is sponsoring two panel discussions:

“Creative Markets for Traditional Products” will take place on February 16, 2012, at 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Creek Grange Hall (82930 Airport Lane, Joseph). This discussion will focus on how local business people, especially farmers and ranchers, have found new markets in response to wider ecological, economic, and social changes. Panelists include Jill McClaran of the McClaran Ranch, Jim Zacharias of JayZee Lumber, and Larry Davis and Nicole Bellows of Northwest Goat Grazers/Happy Chick Farms.

“Keeping Traditions Alive: the Next Generation on Working Land” will take place on March 14, 2012, at 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Creek Grange Hall (82930 Airport Lane, Joseph). This discussion will take a closer look at the future of our working lands, asking how the children of present-day ranchers, farmers, and foresters can own land and make a living. Panelists will include young people who are inheriting and managing family land in Wallowa County. Tickets for each event are $5 general admission and $3 students, available in advance or at the door.

Responsive Program Grants of up to $1,000 are awarded on an ongoing basis to nonprofit organizations in Oregon to fund projects and events that are not part of an organization’s regular programming. Instead, these grants support programs created in response to pressing, current issues or events that the applicant is uniquely qualified to help the public explore.
