Oregon Humanities Awards Grant for Series about Families Affected by War
Homefront 911: Military Family Monologues begins in Portland on August 5

13 July 2011 | Permalink

The Sanctuary for Veterans and Families, located in Medford, will bring the war home in August through a series conversations in locations throughout the Willamette Valley.

Homefront 911: Military Family Monologues is a presentation by families of Iraq/Afghanistan war veterans about how war affects the families left behind, followed by a scholar-facilitated community discussion, led by Karen Spears Zacharias, exploring the past decade of war as historically unique, how culture shapes the experience of military families, and how—or if—communities can help.

The first of these events will take place on Friday, August 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Church, 1422 SW 11th Ave., in Portland. This event is free to the public.

Homefront 911 is funded in part by Oregon Humanities as one of its Responsive Program Grants, which fund activities that are not part of an organization’s standard program¬ming. Upcoming events are being planned for Salem, Eugene, Roseburg, and Medford/Ashland.

The Sanctuary for Veterans and Families’ mission is to provide advocacy, support, wellness programs, and reintegration projects and services for military family members and veterans.

Karen Spears Zacharias writes extensively on matters of faith, family, politics and social issues. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Newsweek, National Public Radio, Relevant Magazine, Christianity Today, CNN, and AARP. She serves on the national advisory board for the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation, and for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Education Center.
