Happy-Hour Series Considers Technology and the Future
Oregon Humanities’ four-part Think & Drink series kicks off March 14

07 February 2012 | Permalink

Oregon Humanities’ Think & Drink series explores how technology shapes the future by looking at social movements, food, artificial intelligence, and robotic warfare. Think & Drink events are free and open to the public.

All events in the series will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at The Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan, Portland. Minors with parents allowed. The series includes the following events:

  • Future of Social Movements and Citizen Power: Wednesday, March 14, 2012
David S. Meyer, professor of sociology, political science, and planning at University of California Irvine and author of The Politics of Protest: Social Movements in America, and Bob Liebman, associate professor of sociology and urban studies and planning at Portland State University, will lead the discussion.
  • Future of Food: Wednesday, May 30, 2012
Robert Paarlberg, professor of political science at Wellesley College and author of Food Politics: What Everyone Should Know, and Susan Bragdon, advisor to the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Environment Programme, and Rockefeller Foundation on international sustainable development, will lead the discussion.
  • Future of Human and Artificial Intelligence: Wednesday, July 18, 2012
Ramez Naam, senior associate of the Foresight Institute and author of More Than Human: Embracing the Promise of Biological Enhancement, and Mott Greene, John Magee Professor of Science and Values at the University of Puget Sound, will lead the discussion.
  • Future of Robotic Warfare: Wednesday, October 24, 2012
General Merrill “Tony” McPeak, retired 14th Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, and Tung Yin, professor of law at Lewis & Clark Law School specializing in post-9/11 national security law, will lead the discussion.

Think & Drink, which invites the public to think and talk together, reflects Oregon Humanities’ emphasis on infusing public conversations with critical thinking and fresh ideas. Past presenters include Luis Palau Association President Kevin Palau, Willamette University scholar David Gutterman, Representative Earl Blumenauer, Portland State University president Wim Wiewel, writer Ursula K. Le Guin, New Seasons Market CEO Brian Rohter, ethicist and lawyer John Frohnmayer, and advertising executive Jelly Helm.
